1 comments about Botero: New Works on Canvas.
- Fernando Botero (1932) is Colombia's greatest, internationally acclaimed artist. He was born in Medellin in 1932, lost his Father in 1934 and was raised by a devoted, loving Mother. Parenthetically, he said of his Mother, "Her never failing words of encouragement helped me become an artist. Every one of my drawings was to her a thing of beauty."
As the title states, this book presents only Botero's contemporary canvas works (1987 to present) and omits his sculptures. Botero has matched and grouped his work in eight sections. The full page color plates are good in quality, though not excellent. Botero's love of color and voluminous forms bring a surrealistic energy to his people, endowing them with a sensual persona. Noteworthy is that almost all of Botero's works shun shadows. He feels that "shadow is the enemy of color". The first fifty seven pages is the transcript of an informative and insightful interview of Botero by Ann Maria Escallon (director of the Art Museum of Americas, Washington, D.C.). This section is a 'must read' for any student or afficionado of Botero. This is a worthwhile addition to any art library. Though the reproductions could have been more vivid and sharper, this book is a wonderful expose of Botero's recent canvas works. Recommended

1 comments about Botero: In the Museo Nacional de Colombia/New Donation 2004.
- Fernando Botero, one of the most admired artists on earth...is Colombia's official "Master of Volume." His distinctive figures...rotund and swollen to monumental proportions articulates his consciousness of tradition. Botero blends this unique "figurative rotund and swollen style" with gentle satirical observations of human beings. To this end, "Botero: Donations to the Museo Nacional," is Botero's heartfelt artistic documentation of the tragic tradition of violence in his native land...Colombia.
Colombia is in the midst of a bloody 58-year civil war. Well-armed guerrillas, paramilitary death squads, drug traffickers, kidnappers, sophisticated money forgers, emerald smugglers, common criminals and an armed forces with a long tradition of human rights violations have assaulted the sensibilities of the people of Colombia to the point that...death is a common companion. Consequently, Botero took it upon his artistic shoulders to document the suffering of the people of Colombia.
The result...a masterpiece. Botero captures the bullets flying...the bloated dead bodies in the rivers..the march of death with coffins...the horrible violence to women in Colombia...the regular injustice...the people praying to be saved...the suffering of children...his intense artwork of Colombia's civil war communicates far better than television or cable broadcasters or journalists or non-fiction authors who try to report the overwhelming violence in Colombia. Botero has done his nation a great service. He has dedicated the time to document the dark and sinister violence of his nation so the world can see how so many suffer. Highly recommended.

2 comments about Botero: Sculptures.
- lots of pictures of his beautiful bountiful work. Botero is in a class of his own. what a delight looking inside the mind of such a great painter.
- This is a wonderful book, photographed and printed beautifully. It revels in the textures of Botero's sculptures, (mostly large scale bronzes) and in their almost pneumatic volumes. Botero has always loved volume, generous and voluptuous volume, and he has always loved to play with scale, as one can see readily in his drawings and paintings. Nothing could be more natural for him than to make sculpture, where he could play with volume and scale and use his wry humor to delicious effect.
Until I saw this book, I had not been aware of how many sculptures Botero had made, but this thick tome shows there are many of them, and most have a magical and monumental presence, no matter what their actual size. I highly recommend this book, which will delight and amaze anyone who is inclined to like Botero's work.

- A preferred selection for us and delivered in excellent condition.
We are VERY pleased.
- Archetypical composition that is autobiographical beyond words is Botero. When you've finished reviewing this beautiful book you will know Botero better than many of your friends and possibly some of your relatives.
Beautifully bound, a real treasure.

2 comments about The Baroque World of Fernando Botero.
- Most important in such a book is that the reproductions are well done and these are. Excellent reproductions of Botero's masterful paintings, drawings, and sculptures. If you aren't able to see the exhibit firsthand, the catalogue is not a bad substitute. The text is interesting and succinctly written. Even the orange ribbon page-marker is a nice touch. This luscious book is a shining example of what an art catalogue should be.
- A good look at Botero's work. The experience with Amazon was another story. Book arrived damaged and Amazon's customer service is pretty awful. It is impossible to speak to a customer service rep and when I tried to return the book, their web site would not allow me to code the book as a personal purchase, only as a "gift", so I had to find something else I wanted to use their amazon "credit" for since they did not permit me to receive a cash or charge card credit. Again, it is impossible to email or call anyone at amazon. Therefore, this is a good book, so if you want it, it would be a good idea to buy it somewhere else, like [...], which is probably cheaper and at least they care if you have a problem.
