  1. I think that E. Hopper is one of the most imporant painters of 20th century. I was fanscinated at the works embodying human's solitude.

  2. When you need a bracing shot of Edward Hopper's realism but don't want to drag your treasured 'coffee-table' books down from the good bookcase, just reach for this handy little paperback. Among the 40 color plates -- approximately postcard size and of good quality -- you will probably find the favorite painting you were looking for. The essay by Heinz Liesbrock, "The Silent Truth of Light: Edward Hopper's Oeuvre", gives a quick written overview. A good value, and an artist whose significance seems to be ever-increasing.

  1. The reason to buy this large (approx 10x14) book is for the LARGE Hopper prints. Not every one is quite this size, but enough are to make picking up a used copy worthwhile. It's a pretty nice selection, and I'm glad to have it even though I have other good Hopper books.

3 comments about Edward Hopper: A Journal of His Work.
  1. The synopsis for this title is incorrect. The text refers to the title "The Poetry of Solitute". THIS publication is a facsimile of Hopper's record keeping journals. It includes mostly thumbnail drawings, paint recipes and sales information for many of his works.

  2. This is a wonderful glimpse into the development of Hopper's paintings. It appears to be a photocopy of Hopper's working journals, which were assembled and maintained by his wife Jo over a period of 30+ years. Jo wrote the text and Edward drew a thumbnail sketch for the paintings. For many of the paintings, the text includes the brand of paint (e.g., Rembrandt, Blockx, W&N), the type of canvas and the priming, the studio in which it was painted, and to whom it was sold. Jo frequently included a description of the place, the people, or the mood portrayed in the paintings.

If you're an artist or a serious Hopper fan, you'll enjoy this book.

  3. I just want to add the note that this book contains a selection of the Hopper notebooks, not the complete works. However, it is, as far as I know, the only way these are published, and the pages are very interesting indeed. It is amazing to see how fine these little sketches are of his more famous paintings. It was meant to be a record, a simple catalog, but it reminds one that Hopper was an excellent graphic artist as well as a painter. i think it is a brilliant idea for any artist as a way of keeping touch with larger works instead of with photographs.

3 comments about The Reading Woman: A Journal.
  1. This is a beautiful journal for women who love books and reading. This lovely volume is organized for the books you've read, books you want to read, books you've loaned out, and more. What sets this jewel apart from other book journals are the lovely prints of paintings depicting women in various situations, simply enjoying reading. No cooking, caring for children, cleaning, teaching, nursing, etc. Just reading for pleasure. The journal also includes wonderful quotes about reading and books. Beautifully done.

  2. I picked up "The Reading Woman" in a museum gift shop and have loved owning it. I use it as a journal of the books I've read in the past and what I'm currently reading. It's amazing how quickly you forget a books you've read, so I enjoy writing my thoughts right after I finish one. The illustrations are lovely, some of them paintings from other centuries. Women have made time for reading FOREVER. Now that I've filled this journal completely, does anyone know of a similar one I can start?

  3. "This exquisite volume, illustrated with beautiful full-color reproductions of paintings of women reading, provides compelling inspiration for recording one's private thoughts. Works by Mary Cassatt, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, Edward Hopper, James McNeill Whistler, and Winslow Homer, as well as contemporary selections, are included. Quotes from well-known female writers on the subjects of literature and reading appear throughout.

"Pomegranate's illustrated journals lend inspiration to thinkers, observers, and diarists. Hardcover, with a contrasting ribbon marker, each journal features 26 full-color illustrations and a wealth of insightful quotes. At only $17.95 it will appeal to the writer in everyone. 120 lined pages. ISBN: 0-87654-816-8; size: 5 1/2 x 8 1/2"."--© Pomegranate
