5 comments about Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt.
  1. Pros: simple, easy to read, good starter ideas
Cons: styles not for everyone, designs generally for petite girls

I had been eying this book for several months and finally broke down and bought it.
To let you know, I am a beginner when it comes to sewing. I am essentially self taught, starting with some needle and thread stuff when I was in middle school and working up to a simple cheap sewing machine that I use now.
I bought this book after flipping through it a few times, it seemed like it had a variety of different t-shirt ideas and that even if I didn't use them all at least they would provide some inspiration.
I agree with some of the other reviews, the safety pin thing gets a bit old, but then again even if you don't like that the book does show you other techniques that could be used as well (sewing seams, using a lace and holes to thread two pieces together, buttons, etc).
THIS BOOK WAS NOT MADE FOR OLDER GENERATIONS NOR FOR HIGH FASHION. It makes it clear on every project that these are designs for punk or hipster types. They are fun ways to transform your old useless clothes into something you might want to wear without too much effort.
Yes, the clothes look better on the super-skinny New York girls that are pictured in the book, but I am a size 18-22 and I was able to pull off many of the designs with little to no adjustments.

In conclusion this is a fun book, it is not a highly technical sewing manual, but an introduction to the possibilities of DIY and to the basics of sewing that would be great for anyone just getting started in sewing or who likes the "deconstructed" look.

  2. We found this book in the library and I had to buy it. I got my daughters and some of their friends together and we cut and sewed and followed the directions. The best part was seeing the creative possibilities. The worst part was seeing that the T you make would not be able to withstand a lot of wear. I realized that if you want to keep the creation you make then you would have to get out the sewing machine and do some real sewing.

We did notice that the t need to be fited and looked at on your body before you cut. We had one girl that wanted to make the halter and following the directions in the book made the halter so small and short that she was uncomfortable with the whole project (even though the picture shows a lot of room in the torso). So making sure of the design before hand is very important.

But the girls did have fun and will be doing it again.

  3. When I first flipped through this book I thought: fab! how imaginative. Unfortunately having looked at it more closely there isn't anything I think I could make that wouldn't make me look tragic. The ideas are mostly centred around the idea of cutting up a very large T-shirt and making it with minimal sewing into something hipper, close fitting and a little punk-inspired - plenty of rips and slashes. Even using the theme of the book, rather than the specific ideas doesn't help me much. I'm sure if I was 16 I'd love it. I write as a warning that the target audience for this book is relatively narrow ie young and that isn't something you might work out from reading the blurb. Well at least I didn't. Yes as you get older you can still be on-trend, but I really think it's better to leave looks such as slashed clothing or the barely-there items etc to the younger crowd.

  4. Saw this at a friends house, and then bought it for my niece for Christmas. I looked through it when I received it, and some of the creations are incredible! I know my niece will have a great time making her own clothes! Can't wait to give it to her!

  5. This book has little machine sewing projects in it. If you want to learn to just cut up Tees than this is a good book and I give 'em credit for the creativity. But I was looking for more sewing projects with Tshirts.

  1. Sorry, folks. I wanted to like it. I gave it a chance. But it just goes on and on and on ... hardly a page-turner! Too much like Tom Clancy's later books!

  2. Let me start by saying that I did not finish the book. I made it about 2/3s of the way through before I put it down. It was not that the book was boring; the story about terrorism and counterterrorism was somewhat compelling. The problem was with the characterizations, especially of the protagonist, Gabrielle Allon. I read this book based on a recommendation of the author by an online pundit. I think I know why he recommended the author; his worldview, at least as it comes across in his blog, is pragmatic. This is a pragmatic book. There were no "good guys" in this book; there were no heroes. The message of this book is that to beat the "bad guys" we have to become like them; we have to become "bad guys" as well. This is a thoroughly pragmatic worldview, and it left me feeling "slimed". Perhaps if I had finished it I would have discovered something uplifting. But life is too short sometimes, and I have other books to read.

  3. Reading your first Daniel Silva book will compel you to buy another and another.......which I have done.

  4. Full of superfluous description, which impedes the flow of the narrative. Dreary and fake.

  5. Hello, Gabriel Allon, you've become a welcome addition to my life.

You really need to get married, though. No spy females, please.

Your creator is as smooth as a vodka gimlet made of France's Grey Goose vodka.

I love this review by Christine Cunningham:[...]

Following the standard rule of rounding, four and a half stars becomes five.

And who says we need to forgive the murderers of our son, the maimers of our wife? Gabriel does in Tariq in the end, as it should be.

An exquisite master art restorer living on the sea shore in Cornwall, England, Gabriel Allon, a lone wolf Mossad assassin, learns to live day by day by meticulous work and sailing a sailboat he restored. The spy is spied on by a young, lonely boy named Peel, whose is a narrative piece of thread I wished had been worked on more.

Allon is pulled back by Amri Shamron, a high level apparatchik Mossad operative and rejoins the hunt. Of humans.

He develops a romantic relationship with a closet Jewess, who is improbably a famous model, Jacqueline. Sarah's her real name. She is used to ferret out the most elusive Palestinian spy Tariq, who was responsible for blowing up Allon's wife's car in Vienna, landing her in an asylum and killing his son.

The intricate, chess-like narrative ends in New York City. Guns are involved, as is that odious former human, Yasser Arafat, who's presented almost nobly.

This is a very welcome beginning of the series staring Gabriel Allon. I have spent many enjoyable hours with him.

    Thank you, Daniel Silva!

5 comments about Discovering Great Artists: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters (Bright Ideas for Learning).
  1. Filled with information on both artists and schools of art with simple projects for each, this book will be very useful at home or in the classroom.

  2. This is a great book to have on hand to teach art or for a rainy day. I love how she goes through various artistic means of expression: buildings, sculpting, painting, etc. She talks about an artist (and includes a picture & some info) and then you create! Very, Very clever! LOVE it! But then again, I love all of the Mary Ann Kohl books we've bought!

  3. I have taught elementary art for over 20 years... I wouldn't be without this book. It is a fantastic resource on some of the more famous artists. I highly recommend this book

  4. When I viewed the sample pages of the book, I was excited. I became even more thrilled by the positive reviews others gave. However, when I received the book and quickly flipped through the pages, I was highly disappointed. I was under the impression that the pages would be colored. My assumption was wrong. Nonetheless, as I took a better look at the ideas presented, I became more assured that I made a great purchase. The authors provide a brief bio on the artist and simple projects related to the artists' style. Therefore, I am not too sad about the book being in black and white. As a teacher who loves to teach art, I know I will use this book as a resource for art projects.

*There is now a link available for this book to view colored copies of the artwork, but now for every artist.

  5. I've read some of the reviews for this book that complain it is not in color. If you know anything about being an educational publisher, you know that they don't make a lot of money, and publishing in color is not a easy option. I think if you use this book, and work with the website that shows all the art in color ([...]), you'll be fine. This is an excellent book and well worth the price. I just reviewed MaryAnn Kohl's newest book, and it IS in full color, so it appears that she listened and did what she could to answer your comments, which is impressive, because it must have been a financial challenge. Good for you, Bright Ring Publishing! i hope it sells well!!! I think if you rethink what this book is for, then you can just let the color come from the children's expression of their own art works. Don't worry about what is on the book page other than the idea of an art project that is AMAZING as well as easy for you to put together for the kids. The kids are more interested in what they can create than in what your book has in it. Again,go to Bright Ring's website and all the color you ever dreamed of will be there for your enjoyment.

5 comments about Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines (Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines).
  1. This book is necessary for anyone wanting to start their own company in the graphic design industry. It covers every aspect of the business & things that you wouldn't think of.

  2. So much information that it will take a lot of time to read it all, but it is so well written and with the right and necessary information that it is a must for everyone in this field. Very informative, clear and to the point. Covers almost every aspect of the Graphic Artist business. Will help a lot, specially with themes regarding your rights and obligation, what is to be expected from an artist and what should an artist expect from others.

The price tables are not accurate for everyone since I believe that there are different markets for different reasons, geographical, economical targets and so on... so you should not expect them to apply exactly to you, but those are really good points of reference you should consider and seriously evaluate.

I don't like the cover at all since it is very confusing and non practical, specially if you are looking for this book in a bookstore by reference and not knowing how it looks like, since it is hard to read it's title at first glance, which I think is a huge violation to the basic rules of commercial design. I think it should have some practical and useful design for that matters. Thats's a no, no, for something coming from an "Artist" Guild. Actually it is an ugly cover (sorry for the artist who created it). The size of it does not help to make it a carry on book say to read everywhere, but for the amount of information it carries, I don't see any more practical shape.

    Buy it!

  3. I've illustrated over 20 children's books, 10 of which without this book. Once I used the contracts from this book, I got paid what my time was worth! Great tips on pricing what your work and time. Most importantly, selling artist usage rights to multiple users. Who says your efforts can't be duplicated from one project to the next. This book is Gold! Pick up a copy and use it! Only for serious individuals wanting to do business in the real world. I recommend this book to authors, publishers, and anyone I work with.

  4. This is the bible of graphic arts. Every working designer and illustrator in the business should keep a copy by their side.

  5. Priceless and necessary material for all graphic artists, especially those like me that are just beginning to get some sort of grasp on how much things should cost.

  1. Does anyone know what the title of the movie was that is based on this book?

  2. I picked this book up at a local book store because I was going on vacation. I read a lot of complex books and such, in my profession so I was looking for something simple, easy to read, but very fun and enjoyable. WEll, this book accomplished all of the above.

The book is a great introductory book to a young person who is a pre-teen making a transition into chapter books. Ms. Konigsburg develops the characters well, especially the children, and I promise there are surprises around every corner.

My favorite character in the book has to be Mrs. Frankweiler. She is so mysterious only because she wants to be. I remember many times growing up wishing I had some all-important secret that I could keep to make me important. Then I wondered could I actually keep the secret? Mrs. Frankweiler doesn't just have one important secret she has file cabinets full.

I went to the national Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, FL right after reading this book, and found myself asking where would I hide in here.

I love this book, and would reccomend it to the young and the young at heart. Just when you think you know everything, trust me you know nothing in this book. Even at the end you understand that Mrs. Frankweiler is the master keeper of secrets.

  3. From the Mixed-up Files of
    Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
    By E.L. Konigsburg

This is a delightful story for children of all ages. I'm wondering why I never discovered this book when I was a kid?

Claudia is planning to run away. She wants a different life, than that of the oldest child with so many responsibilities. Her brother Jamie doesn't know it yet, but she has chosen him to be her companion. One reason she has chosen Jamie, is because he is good with money. Claudia usually spends her money on hot fudge sundaes, but Jamie has saved over twenty dollars.

Claudia plans for them to take a train to New York City, and stay in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts. Hiding out, being hungry most of the time, and walking in order to save money, the two children experience the adventure of a lifetime. They also get involved in the mystery of an angel statue which was sold to the museum by Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Could the angel statue be a real Michelangelo? Only Mrs. Frankweiler knows for sure.

Will Claudia and Jamie get caught in the museum? Will they run out of money and need to go home before solving the mystery? Does their family really miss them? Can they find Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler? Will she be willing to help them, if they do find her?

I recently spent the night in The Museum of Ancient History, in Draper Utah, with two of my granddaughters. They call it Dino-snores. We slept right under the tail of a huge dinosaur. There is definitely something intriguing about sleeping in a museum, especially when the lights go out.

  4. It was a good book because it was full of suspense, action, funny stuff, and laughter. I would like to read it again somtime when I have free reading time.

  5. After the Witches by Roald Dahl this is my second favorite children's book. I just absolutely love it!!

5 comments about New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook: Guided Practice in the Five Basic Skills of Drawing.
  1. I have a family that is full of artists, and always felt really sad that I couldn't draw even a stick figure! A little while ago I realised something important - that drawing is a form of literacy, like writing, and so many of us don't make it past kindergarten.

Visual communication is really under-rated in our school systems, which pretty much relegates most of us to the category of 'non-drawers'. Betty Edwards' book changes that!

The work book is really all you need, although if you would like to go into the reasons behind her book, then the text is great. I bought both and am very glad I did.

I am only part-way through the workbook, but it's amazing to see what can be produced in such a short time. If you want to climb that wall that has been bordering in your creativity, then I can't recommend this book highly enough!

  2. This is a good guide for students and a great-abbreviated version of the full-length instruction book. It makes it easy to keep a record of your progress especially if you are not interested in keeping a journal while you are learning to draw.

  3. i have read the book drawing on the right side of the brain. what this book is can be also taken right out of the original book. it is just more of what it says a work book. or you could just use some drawing pad to do the exercises in it. It takes out of the book the lessons, so save your money and just by the book. which by the way actually is also a very useful book to learn and understand drawing . It is not that it is a bad book, it is just wiser to save your money and buy the actual book to read itself. everything in the workbook is taken from the reading book.

  4. Great book for those of us with a creative bent but not sure how to proceed. Recommended by Daniel Pink.

  5. This is a very fine guide for learning to draw, understanding the principles of drawing, and practicing drawing in a practical way/

5 comments about The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide - How to Exploit Her Inner Psycho.
  1. This is an ok book on this subject. In some places it just tries to be too smart in desperation. I have read much better dating books. This one is not bad but not too good either. Though I must say that the main difference between this book and others on the same topic is that this book wants its reader to know that a real man wouldnt care less if he goes through extended periods of dateless days. He should have his career and a long list of hobbies to keep him busy CREATIVELY. I couldnt agree more.
Somehow I feel that most men who buy dating books are willing to try too hard with women. It shouldnt even be such a big priority in men's lives.

  2. A highly charged topic, and sensationally titled piece. The advice works for 14-80 yr. old men. With so many nonsense PUA titles out there, this is intellectually a level higher. No games, pick up lines, or poser stuff. Manipulative Women, feminists and metrosexuals will hate it, because it tells it like it is. The author sees through women with hilarious wit, knows every rope and technique. Written for the Alpha male in a hurry.

It's for the 30ish guy with money who's played the field enough to have seen the highly volatile, immature, selfish, controlling dark side of women, and wants to master speed seduction on his terms. Having complete control of his dating and sex life, while maintaining his assets during his pursuits.

Many diverse sections covered; great psychoanalysis of different female personalities; knowing the angles, each girl's quirks and desires. Knowing how the end game will play out before it begins. Knowing when to bail. Like a field general.

Great advise on creating a more attractive you, defining your life going forward, rejecting dating hypocrisy. Don't focus so much about getting laid, create the perfect dominant lifestyle for yourself. The sex is just one part of it. Pure alpha, being assertive, dominant, going for who you want, when you want, getting what you want while managing your time, maintaining your sanity, and dignity.

The best selling point is his big picture advise; how to set up asset protection long before you take things to the next level with a woman. with divorce rate at 50%+, and the women always winning in court, there's tens of millions of men who would have benefited from the advise but didn't take the opportunity to.

  3. The author's advice for the big picture, as he walks you through setting up asset protection pre-marriage in case you pick the wrong girl, is absolutely brilliant. I can easily see this creating a whole movement that could alter the marriage playing field in a hurry. I also recommend the book: I Love You. Now What?: Falling in Love is a Mystery, Keeping It Isn't

  4. Funny, raw analysis. The defensive asset management section is brilliant, the dating guide all true and written tongue in cheek, which makes it so fun to read. Dennis Miller type wit.

In a nutshell, a book about getting laid while protecting your money, but half the fun is reading the cynical observations and rants about wacko women we've all dated at one time. He nails it when he says "Women are entitled to the same amount of respect they give you, and not one ounce more." Gentlemanly behavior prevails with the girls who prove to be honest and trustworthy, (10% of the women), the beeotches can pay for themselves, and should be tossed immediately. Anyone who's studied psychology will recognize how accurate and useful the personality profiling section is.

To let you know how good this book is; the girls in my officeI keep hearing girls at work having fire breathing conversations about it.
Talk about being exposed. I'm surrounded by female users and scammers on their cell all day working 5 guys at a time. They go around bashing this book and men, and then try to come across as pure as snow. Frankly they revolt me, and I haven't made eye contact in years. I make sure I have my book front and center on my desk when the crew walks by.

Every guy needs a copy of this one.

  5. Fantastic...and oh so funny. You will be reading and the next second howling over in laughter. But this is the one. Intellectuals only please. This isn't a cologne and breath-mint book. This is the kick in the pants that u needed! I always hear how "i've read so many other books and this one is great...blah, blah." So have I and this is a must get!! I never leave a review, EVER!! But I absolutely had to. It is that good. So much information...a long read...but that is what u want, isn't it?? Twenty bucks buys a lot of info. Thanks Dr. Tate. U got my vote for Man of the Year!!

5 comments about Cashflow Quadrant: Rich Dad's Guide to Financial Freedom.
  1. A great concept.

If you have not read any of Kiyosaki's books, read this one first.

I hate to use the word "paradigm" because it is often thrown around too easily and it is overused, but this book will change the way you look at your financial life.

Ultimately, you will need to read additional books after this one for more indepth content, but this book will get your mind going in the right direction.

  2. Like others, I do agree this book is a little repetitive. Mr. Kiyosaki does restate the same ideas he mentioned in his first book but he goes into more detail on other ideas; like how he made money on some deals. This book is meant to be a general 'coaching' and not a get rich quick seminar. So the repetitive pep talks are necessary and probably are similar in method to which his rich dad gave him. Furthermore, after a lifetime of repeating bad money habits, one needs repetition before correcting those habits. I do plan on continuing the series.

  3. Outstanding book. It provides the right financial wisdom that is so desperately needed by many in this country.
Oh, how I wish I could have had a book like this 20 years ago!
It will make much better sense if you read the first book in the series first though, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", if you haven't already done so.

  4. Want to know why the rich get richer and everyone else seems to struggle? Is this an end all on the subject- NO it is not, as Robert himself would tell you the study of money if a lifetime pursuit.

However this book does an excellent job of describing the basics of why the rich get richer- and how they do it.

This book is also the first that enabled me to understand some basic accounting principles- mostly by not using numbers and formulas just some simple diagrams. Does it make you a CPA- No. But it does get a working class guy with little to no accounting knowledge the basic understanding of a personal financial statement.

Robert Kiyosaki (and his advisors) write books that make what seems to be complex money subjects seem understandable. Kind of the way AOL made the internet seem easy. Most of us have outgrown AOL a LONG, LONG time ago. And you can improve your financial literacy easily with Robert and his team.

  5. This book is really the "core" of beliefs that are expressed in many of the author's books.

Where this book excels is getting people out "employee" or "self employed" mentality and thinking in a "business owner" or "investor" mentality. After I read this book I really started looking at my co-workers in a strange way and decided I needed a change.

Kiyosaki recommends investing in assets that create a positive cash flow immediately. Easier said than done, but the author admits it's not easy -to get rich!

Since I've read this book, I've left the "employee" and "self-employed" mentality behind and have really focused on business owner mentality. Although my personal "cash flow" initially dropped in the process, my long term situation has definitely improved and put me on target to achieve higher levels of success.

5 comments about The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity [10th Anniversary Edition].
  1. If you are looking for validation for the talents you think might be lurking around inside you somewhere, you need to read this. It will remind you that there's more to who you are than just a work-producing-robot! With The Artist's Way as my workbook, I am now reading Cameron's Right to Write and am looking forward to Vein of Gold. Just get the book. If she wrote the phone book I think I'd read it!

  2. My boyfriend and I have an ongoing argument about whether fear or laziness is more likely to keep someone from action. He claims it's laziness, but my answer is fear.

Julia Cameron would seem to agree with me. Her book, a classic for "blocked" artists, outlines a 12-week program for "creative recovery." Week one is devoted to the tension between "the dream of action and the fear of failure."

I discovered The Artist's Way nearly two years ago, and it became I lifeline for me as I recommitted myself to singing.

The book's numerous exercises helped me discover and confront the fears that held me back from fully pursuing my dream.

Self-acceptance and the freedom to fail have been essential to me as I've taken new artistic risks, and they are woven throughout Cameron's recipe for success.

The spiritual overtones in The Artist's Way might not appeal to all readers. However, I found it easy to "translate" these into my own words, and I highly recommend the book to anyone who has fallen into a creative rut.

  3. This book got into my hands at a crucial moment in my life and has been a life changing experience. I would recommend it to anyone struggling with self doubt about your capacity to create art.
Do the 12 weeks and you will discover a new you.

  4. Got this book for an Artist's Way course and I'm glad I'm in the weekly course or I wouldn't do the projects. For me, I need to not only be held accountable but also to hear what others are doing as they open their path. It also helps to have a facilitator who is open and offers suggestions. The book is rather dated and doesn't take into account the time we spend on the internet and how that needs to be balanced.

  5. A good accompany piece to The Artist's Way book. Can't use this instead. So much is left out but she hits some key points.

  1. This book is about the chronicles his journey from a lonely man with no confidence to a master pickup artist. Eventually, the pendulum settles somewhere in the middle in this guys life. Even the ending is satisfying. Very interesting, very involving and very enlightening. I also recommend other book about relationships I Love You. Now What?: Falling in Love is a Mystery, Keeping It Isn't

  2. I read this book expecting it to be a "how-to" on meeting and getting to know women. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a captivating true story of a man's (and several other men's) metamorphosis from socially inept people to masters of attracting women. For anyone looking for the "how-to" material, it's all there, woven into the story. But there is more. We get to truly see these men for who they are and we see how becoming successful with women affects their lives in different ways. It is encouraging, extremely entertaining, and even heartwarming.

  3. I gave some thought to purchasing this book after reading Tucker Max's "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell". I never would have figured it's a book on how to turn yourself from a social outcast into a player...by using magic tricks. Wow can you get any lamer? Do you honestly think that pulling a quarter out from behind your ear is going to get you women, you mine as well dress up in your star trek outfit and head out to the bars...don't forget your pointy ears.
Suggestion: Don't waste your money, I'd rate it lower if I could.

  4. Thanks Style, not only have you given hope to shlubs like me, but you have demonstrated that self-improvement, while done to get women, is still a good thing. Over the last 3 years you have done little more than learn how to become an interesting person. I only wish that some of the bores in my life would take the time to learn how to be a little more interesting. Of course, living in Washington DC, there are never going to be a shortage of boring people. Thanks to you, I am effortlessly rising above them.My friends are complimenting me on the transformation that has taken place since I became aware of you. Thanks again!

  5. Absolutely dreadful; a complete waste of time and money; does not work on any level.
