1. A few short essays. The same stills over and over.
   
   But the essays are superb. Klaus Biesenbach sums the scene up, brings it to life, in just 4 pages.
   
   The stills have become captivating in a month of viewing. Two hundred pages of them, effective black-and-white. How hard to stay still for 3 minutes. What's more erotic than Jane Holzer brushing her teeth?
   
   The magic of Warhol is expertly conveyed. Here probably more than in the "Pop Box", the "Time Capsule 21", even the "365 Takes".
   
   I haven't seen a Warhol film (or screen test) yet but this is the book that makes me want to. Do you have to be a Warhol fan already? Until you've seen something like this of the movies, you may not have actually been a Warhol fan. Hearing about the movies isn't enough. The silkscreens tend to be cold but there's lots of heat in these shots. In just these minimalist stills from minimallist movies, so much shows. It may be the closest I've come to experiencing Warhol.

1. Galella was Warhol's favorite photographer---not Steichen, Adams or Weegee, but the celebrity chasing, exploitation-driven paparazzo. This tome celebrates this fame with 200 of the photographer's pictures of Andy, alone and with the famous and infamous cast in his life. Larger than your average coffee-table book---add legs and it could serve as a coffee table---That's Great! offers a fascinating take into a rarified atmosphere. Warhol himself was terribly shy and suffered from several acute skin conditions, so he did "paint" himself, then adding a wig before being seen in public. Some of these photos, taken late in the evening, or rather, early in the morning, do not necessarily show Warhol at his best. However, Galella's signature photos document an era gone by, a decadent, selfish period of superstars and sluts, beauties and beasts, of media mad mavens recreating themselves to make a buck. Warhol is in all of the photos, as, indeed, the touchstone of the times, but it's the supporting cast, from Liza to Bianca to Jackie O to the complete cast of Studio 54 and the Warhol Factory that powers this collection. Galella's photographs suggest a toxic past that had to end; by some magic, only Warhol himself seems comfortable and at home in these pictures, while his friends and fans seem striving much too hard to have fun.

3. I love Galellas photos and his books are simply gorgeous,The Disco Years was my first and recently the Warhol book,cant wait for more!buy this book!!



4. Andy and Ron, a perfect team who delivers stunning celebrity photography of the last 40 years or so. One feels Ron Galella was not just recording these moments as he was living them with the famous and infamous. He gets emotions from happy to bored from people we all read about in 'Life', 'People' and 'The Enquirer'(C'mon, you know you read it in the market checkout). If you lived through this time frame, Ron's book is an imaginative walk through the decades. It makes the current papparazzi glitter globe pale in comparison. Give us another Jackie O, Andy Warhol or Liz Taylor and their jet set pals again--that would be great! We're bored with teen idols who get arrested for DWI and get caught naked on their patios!



5. As a fan of Ron Galella and Andy Warhol this book is a must have! It's so wonderful to see Andy and all the glamorous superstars again! I would also highly recommend Ron Galella's The Disco years, I bought it last summer and it is still on my coffee table!

1. You can get a excellent sense of Warhol's progress from this book. 1962 seems to have been a decisive years. Before 1962, one can see Warhol's transition from commercial artist and early experimentalism. Beginning sometime in 1962, one sees the emergence of the well-chosen, well-executed images that Warhol is known for.
   
   It seems helpful in understanding his growth to see some of Warhol's less appealing works. Nonetheless, with a total of about 320 pages of images, there are still plenty of Warhol's bettter works to see here.
   
   Four high-quality, significant essays about Warhol open this book. The closing includes a chronology, a "collective portrait" consisting of short contributions from many who knew Warhol well, and "Warhol in his own words", selections that reveal how insightful yet straight-forward Warhol could be.
   
   This seems to be the single best bible of Warhol's paintings. There is a comprehensive collection of Warhol's prints available in "Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne: 1962-1987" which seems prettier but may suffer from excessive prettiness. Warhol's trashier aspects are not apparent, nor is his experimental reach, in the prints. Both books have their appeal, but as a one source collection of Warhol's painting and critical assessments of it this Retrospective seems unparalleled.
   
   For a good exposure to Warhol in all his diversity, "Andy Warhol: 365 Takes" by the staff of the Andy Warhol Museum is also valuable, but to focus on the paintings, this retrospective seems ideal.
