  1. In The Religious Art Of Andy Warhol, art historian and curator Jane Dillenberger explores the sources and manifestations of the controversial pop-artist's spiritual side as revealed through his work. Especially his Skill paintings, the Warhol prints based on Renaissance religious artwork, his Cross paintings, and the large Warhol series based on "The Last Supper". Warhol grew up on a Slovakian ghetto of Pittsburgh and experienced the elaborate and colorful rituals of the Byzantine Catholic Church. These influences also included his devout mother with whom he lived some forty of his fifty-eight years. The Religious Art Of Andy Warhol is a "must" for all Warhol fans, as well as students of 20th century American art.

  1. This is the catalogue for a Warhol exhibition that was held in London and Los Angeles some years ago. It is a good and comprehensive introduction to his paintings, indispensable to the understanding of the most famous pop artist. I have always been skeptic about Warhol's claim to be a great painter, seeing him more as a manipulator of ideas, however brilliant and influential. This book slightly changed my opinion in that it shows what a master of representation he was, his ability to use color as a means of communication, the way he forces us to look at reality in a different way through mundane themes, celebrities, current affairs raised to the status of icons of our society. The book is arranged chronologically, underlining the different series the artist became famous for.
Heiner Bastian is a respected dealer and curator and is very knowledgeable on his subject.I do not give it five stars because the quality of the images could have been improved.

  1. I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend, who loves Warhol (although now it seems everyone loves Warhol). She was not very intrigued by the book, even though she also loves collecting knick-knacks. So I looked closely at the book trying to figure out why, and I have to say that the book just doesn't have enough in it. I think that the text is well written and shares some interesting anecdotes, and philosophical/psychological discussion of collecting, but that's not really why I thought the book would be cool. I think we wanted to see those Time Capsule boxes opened up, more shots of his home (there are some, but not many), and then there is a whole chapter on random people who collect things--why is this chapter included? Do I care what some unkown goofball finds interesting? I think this book was a great concept, but it falls flat in my mind.

5 comments about All Tomorrow's Parties: Billy Name's Photographs of Andy Warhol's Factory.
  1. Billy Name has released most likely the most important pictures from the famous Andy Warhol Factory. In ALL TOMMOROW'S PARTIES, Billy captures the true depths of the list of characters in the Warholian 1960s. Shot in brilliant color we get to see what the people really looked like and see that they were not all star's but real people with hearts. This book is a must for any Warhol fan, photographer, or someone with an interest in the 60s.

  2. a surprisingly refreshing view of the warhol sixties. shots of lou reed and the velvet underground very initmate. name was really decades ahead of current popular art photographers with his brilliant surrealistic color and funky format!

  3. The interview w/Billy is great, the pix capture the air of the crowd and the essence of their era...but i wasn't satisfied; it captured the Factory kids but not the factory itself. And the info therein was relatively limited.

i feel this book is meant for appreciation and sheer sight-enjoyment, something to be left as an exclamation rather than an explanation.

  4. Billy Name was there and has one-zillion photographs from which to choose, so I was truly disappointed by the "artistic" crud he chose to print. I wanted to see real photographs of real people, not how clever he was at "conveying the feeling" of the time. I resent this book because it could've been so much better. I didn't buy it to see Name's artistic view of a momentary, yet monumental, era. I bought it hoping I could study people's faces, stances, outfits, the background. I wanted to study the pictures and respond to them all by myself without the photographer hammering me with images amounting to dogma. I mean, the Empire State Building? Yeah, that's really deep and cuts to the heart of things. Name needs to share, not hoard. But lucky for us all, he was there with a camera and actually took pictures. And of all the Warhol set, Name's autobiography would be one of the most interesting.

  5. ... location. If you'd been there, you probably could have taken a collection of photographs of at least equal caliber. What matters in these photos is who is in them, with little apparent attention to the construction of the shots.

So if you'd like to see mediocre photographs but of extraordinary 2nd Factory regulars at that Factory as well as Max's Kansas City and Central Park, this may be your book. It may beat looking at nothing, they may bring you back to a special time.

The value for me lies in a 13 page interview with Billy Name. If you are trying to understand the mysteries of Warhol and his Factories, Billy Name would be a great source of information. Think silver.

You can also (September 2005) see Billy Name photos, mostly black and white, at his web site. He also has some interviews there he was the subject of.
