5 comments about Rockport Men's Ellingwood Oxford.

  1. Out of the box, you'd think these shoes are pretty comfortable - in fact, considering that they stole an important aspect of Mephisto's shoes design, the Soft-Air mechanism (which Rockport calls the Kinetic Air Circulator), they SHOULD be comfortable. But after a few weeks, they most certainly aren't. The quality simply isn't there compared to Mephisto shoes. The leather is thin, stiff and plasticky, the insole is cheap foam that quickly flattens out, and the rest of the shoe just isn't up to par with genuinely comfortable shoes. Once the insole wears out in a month (if you do much of any walking), the shoes go from sort-of comfortable to painful. The hard leather does not conform to your foot, but rather squeezes it when you take a step and the toe cap digs into the top of your foot if the shoe bends too far. I don't recommend buying these shoes unless your foot happens to be exactly the same as the shape of these shoes, because they're completely unyielding and become painful even to sit around in after a few weeks.

  2. I have very narrow feet--A width; and very long feet--13. It's tough to find a shoe that I can wear, unless I'm willing to pay $300 for a pair of shoes. I was pleasantly surprised that this shoe offers a relatively good fit and wears extremely well. This is my second pair of the Ellingwood Oxford. My first pair, black in color, are a year old and still look like new. Now if Rockport would just make all their styles in Narrow....

  3. Out of the box, the shoe was not as comfortable as I was expecting when I walked. But it seemed to fit and after a couple weeks is now very comfortable.

  4. This will be my second pair of Ellingtonwood Oxfords. I will admit that I'm no fashion slave, but these shoes go well with my day-to-day office shirt and tie, and I've even worn them with my tux (without my wife even noticing). These are the most comfortable dress shoes I've ever owned, but there's a huge added bonus - these shoes are water resistent. My feet stay dry and happy whether is rain or shine! (Check out the Rockport website for more details.) These shoes are more expensive than most of the shoes that I tend to buy (I like to stay in the $60 range). When I tried them on in the store, I had to think for a moment if my feet would appreciate spending the additional 20 bucks. I also weighed the hassle of more shopping and the answer was obvious. I forked over my eighty bucks and my feet are grateful.

  5. These shoes were somewhat comfortable right out of the box and after a week of break in they are very comfortable all day, even walking around alot. That's what I selected Rockports for, and they are living up to their reputation in that area.

However, in person the uppers have the look of a less expensive shoe, like the department store house brand that is similar to the high quality shoes in style but only costs half as much. If these cost less, I'd easily give them another star, but for the price my perception is they're somewhat lacking in this area.

So far the workmanship appears to be solid.

  1. I always liked the way they looked, but thought they were too expensive for the simplicity.
Mind, living here in New Mexico is realy hot so after looking for some fresh shoes I finally decided to give these Converse a shot.

Pleasently suprised as I was, these things actually are as comfy as everyone always says. Not too much ankle support unless you lace them up tight though. But I found they can be evrything you want them to be. For support, lace them tight. For more comfort and ventilation, lace them loose. On top of that they fit with every pair of pants, even dress pants.

My feet are not hot anymore and walking has become more enjoyable.

  2. The shoes are great, and the shipping time was reasonable, as was the price. A warning: not all types can be shipped to Canada, which is frustrating to find out just as you're finishing up an order.

  3. Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars are not just a fashion statement. Back in the day, they were my choice of athletic footwear -- following in my father's footsteps -- while starting center on the high school basketball team. For a 6'2" white guy with a moderate vertical leaping ability, I didn't have to worry about losing any spring in my step, and I always led stats in rebounds and blocked shots against players wearing the then-ubiquitous Adidas, Puma and Converse "Dr. J" hi-tops. In all fairness, and as a disclaimer, 80% of the opposing team members were white guys, too.

Still, though I have absolutely no vertical leap left (hey. I graduated 24 years ago), I still wear these shoes, just because. Like one reviewer pointed out, they're a great conversation starter. Plus, they're as comfy as a second pair of feet.

At the turn of the 20th to the 21st century, it appeared that there'd be NO Chucks left at all: The Massachusetts factory was closing down, and Chucks appeared to be going the way of acid-wash jeans. Fortunately (or, unfortunately, if you're a member of the garment workers' union), Converse went through some reorganization and now makes these overseas, presumably in China.

Well, I'm boycotting the People's Republic of China, an anti-labor country that has helped more American CEOs bust unions than just about anyone else. Its own people are slave labor. Fortunately, I thought ahead, so when Converse was on the ropes, I went out to every shoe store around and bought up all the size 12 hi tops I could find. To be exact, 143 pairs -- a closet full. I've got 'em in white, optical white, green, red, basic black, navy blue, yellow, orange, you name it. Set me back $2700, but was worth every penny, knowing that American workers made them.

I AM THE IMELDA MARCOS OF CONVERSE CHUCK TAYLOR ALL-STAR SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, if you're a newcomer to them, or missed the boat, I won't hate ya for buying these for yourselves. They are so cool, I'll look the other way.

I have to look the other way myself: I buy the toddler sizes for my two wittle one. Aw!!!! :) At least I help keep American shoe store employees employed, if not factory workers.

  4. I absolutely love my red Chucks. They are a timeless look that can be worn with your favorite jeans, tailored slacks, or a mini. And at such a great price, a better buy than the more modern sneakers in the same category. The shoes do run big, so be sure to the follow the suggestion of ordering two sizes smaller than your normal shoe size. I recieved my order from Eastbay within 3 days of purchase.

  5. When I first started buying them I had at least 4 different colors of the high-tops. I loved the broad spectrum of colors. However, about 3 years ago the company was bought out. The prices almost doubled. What was a cool shoe for about $20 is now $40-50.
They have no arch support, sometimes you can see the glue, the shoelaces are often not long enough to lace up the whole shoe, and they wear out pretty quickly (of course that's because I wear them nearly every single day) - that's not what I expect from a $50 shoe!
They also seem to be issuing them in fewer shades. I have had trouble in times past finding the right shade of green or purple.

I still love the shoe, and still own 1 pair of navy blue ones, but I find them hard to recommend to others.

I recently was in Thailand where they make the shoes and they were $21 in the stores. I was so excited to see them in the colors I want at the price I used to pay!... but it annoyed me to realize - I'm paying $19-29 each pair for the shipping costs + more markup for the American stores....
